Yoga for Scoliosis Overview

Yoga for Scoliosis

Healthy Yoga Day 16 is a yoga class for people with scoliosis

Scoliosis affects two to three percent of the population. It can develop at any time in life, however it most commonly develops between ten and fifteen years of age.

Although we often think it happens mostly to girls, boys are equally affected. Scoliosis is very common among the elderly as well.

Our spine has natural curves. Lordosis curves of the spine move inward toward the center of the body.

Kyphosis curves of the spine curve in the opposite direction, outward. Lordosis curves are in the neck, lower back, and the coccyx. Kyphosis curves occur in the upper back and sacrum area.

These natural curves give us flexibility and act almost like a spring in absorbing impact on our body. In contrast, scoliosis curves are lateral or unnatural side curvatures of the spine.

These unfortunate sideways curves can cause mild to severe back pain. Yoga help alleviate the pain by stretching the tight muscles of the back and strengthening them as well.

Yoga for Scoliosis Poses

Several studies have shown that one yoga posture in particular is helpful when done regularly and held for a period of 30 seconds or longer.

That yoga posture is side plank pose.

This yoga class for scoliosis explains how to do the poses and some others that have been shown to help with the discomfort of scoliosis.

If scoliosis is discovered early in age the benefits of a regular yoga practice are even more effective and possibly even curative.

If you are suffering with mild or severe scoliosis ask and consult with your doctor before beginning any exercise program including yoga.

The beginners yoga class for scoliosis includes stretches and strengthening exercises. It’s about 17 minutes long including the introduction and anatomy of the curvature of the spine. The actual physical movement is about 10 minute.

Is Yoga Good for Scoliosis?

Be gentle as you stretch to avoid strain or discomfort. The sequence of postures are designed to relieve and reduce all levels of spinal mobility.

People with scoliosis may experience sciatica and the correct restorative positions in this series may release and improve that naturally too.

Feel your whole body improve from morning to night, when sleeping or awake. Live your best life. Strengthen the muscles that assist the spinal column like the shoulders, psoas, thoracic mid-back, rib cage area and top cervical spine.

I hope you feel better and find the strength and flexibility to help alleviate any discomfort you may be experiencing with this yoga exercise practice for scoliosis.
