Healthy Yoga Day 15 Yoga for Low Back Pain & Sciatica
One of the health challenges many of us might deal with is Sciatica.
When someone comes to me for relief from Sciatica or low back pain, and if the student places their hands on the upper hip bones just below the lumbar spine I figure it might be sciatica.
If the pain radiates down the back of the legs and even in the feet, I can be almost certain that it is caused by a shifting of the sacrum bone and it’s relationship with the hip bones.
The sacrum bone fits into the hip bones almost like a puzzle. Any shifting of the sacrum can move the bones out of alignment which might pinch the sciatic nerve causing pain.
The bones are meant to articulate or move, but if locked out of alignment, problems could arise.
Yoga for Sciatica Pain
A chiropractic adjustment or physical therapy might be prescribed. Yoga movements, specifically supine pigeon and other hip openers can help to realign the bones of the pelvic region.
If you are struggling with sciatica be sure to consult with a medical professional before beginning any physical exercise. In my past, as a yoga teacher, I received many referrals from doctors in the medical community for patients or students with sciatica.
I can honestly report that yoga always helped. When done mindfully, with an awareness of physical sensations, the gentle yoga postures shared in this video can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with sciatica.
Yoga for Sciatica Exercises
There are specific yoga postures I recommend for relief of low back and sciatic pain. The yoga poses in this video specifically stretches for the hips, hamstrings, and lower back region.
Beginners, intermediate or advanced yoga students will enjoy each stretch designed to relieve back pain caused by sciatica. The flexibility exercises flow and move to improve flexibility for all levels.
This brief how-to 17-minute video can be broken down into short 10 min segments. or pause in postures that feel good and enjoy it for 20 or 30 minutes. For a beginner at home dealing tight moves with the pain of sciatica go slow, not fast. Be mindful as you find the perfect dose.
